After the kill he danced around it, celebrating his success. By the time of his second bison hunt, six years later, his experience was quite the opposite. At the rate Bison were being slaughtered, he recognized that few people will ever get the chance to witness this magnificent animal. His fascination with American Bison increased as he grew older pursuing his interest as a hunter-conservationist and naturalist. To Roosevelt the buffalo had become the symbol of America’s wild nature and western culture.

During Roosevelt’s presidency, the American Bison Society was formed at New York’s Bronx Zoo in 1905, where Roosevelt was named honorary president. The society’s first president, William Hornaday, was the first director of the New York Zoological Society (now the Wildlife Conservation Society), which operated the Bronx Zoo. He was a pioneer in the early wildlife conservation movement and advocate for bison protection.

In 1907, the Bronx Zoo and ABS began shipping bison out west to repopulate the American Plains. President Roosevelt supported the first three reintroductions: at the Wichita Mountains Reserve, Wind Cave National Park, and the National Bison Range. These combined efforts paved the way for protection of the buffalo. Today, there are approximately 500,000 bison in the United States, including 5,000 in Yellowstone.

In 2016, President Obama signed the National Bison Legacy Act into law, officially making the American bison the national mammal of the United States. National Bison Day is celebrated on the first Saturday in November – only days from Teddy Roosevelt’s birthday.
