The battle
of Little Bighorn known as Custer’s Last Stand was an armed engagement between combined forces of the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes and the U.S. 7th Cavalry. Led by U.S. Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer, the U.S. 7th Cavalry was defeated by the native tribes estimated to be between two and six thousand warriors. Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse and Chief Gall unconventionally banded together and devised
a plan to defeat the U.S. and its failed commitments to uphold its treaties.

Five of the 7th Cavalry’s twelve companies were annihilated. Custer’s division of 210 men including his two brothers, his nephew and brother-in-law were all killed in thirty minutes. In total, 268 out of 700 soldiers died, the names of which are memorialized on Custer’s Monument located on the battlefield in southeastern Montana. After the fighting was over the only remaining survivor on the battlefield was Captain Myles Keogh’s horse, “Comanche”.

Many infamous Native American Indians fought in
the battle – Rain in the Face, Low Dog, Crow King and Short Bull all contributed to the defeat the 7th Cavalry. Their testimony and other survivors of the battle gave historians enough details to paint an accurate picture as the events unfolded.

Custer’s Last Stand has been one of the most scrutinized battles in history, with many theories about why he lost. Some believed the army issued Springfield rifle should have been replaced with the more superior, Henry repeating rifle, which was used by many of the native tribes. Others suggest Custer ignored his own native scouts who reported they were far outnumbered. There was also speculation that his own officers disagreed with his battlefield tactics which led to the fall of Custer and his men.

The myths and legends surrounding Custer and the “Battle of Little Bighorn” will no doubt continue to be dissected and untangled for generations to come.
